At one time or another we all feel anxious over family obligations, work, health issues or other problems in our everyday lives. However, if anxiety affects your life in ways you cannot control and lasts for more than six months, you may be experiencing anxiety disorder. Learning more about this disorder and about the different ways to alleviate the symptoms will help you get back to leading a healthy, productive life.

What is an Anxiety Disorder?

Anxiety disorder is a condition in which the person worries excessively about one or many aspects of their life. Their worry and concern becomes so overwhelming that it begins to interfere with their work, relationships and family life. About 3 percent of the population experiences anxiety disorder and twice as many women as men are affected by it. It generally begins before the age of 24, but people of all ages can develop this disorder.

People who experience anxiety disorder are very prone to having panic attacks.

Panic attacks occur when a person becomes so overly anxious that they begin to lose control. Symptoms of a panic attack are hyperventilating, racing heart, dizziness, shaking, chest pain or tightening, and an irregular heartbeat. People who experience panic attacks compare it to a heart attack. After the panic attack, people with anxiety disorder generally display behavioral changes such as becoming withdrawn, emotional, crying or difficult to calm down.

While doctors aren’t sure of all of the causes of anxiety disorder, they do know that it typically occurs in people with a history of depression, having one or more phobias, alcoholism and drug use. It is also known to be genetically passed down among family members. People who have had a terrifying or traumatic experience in their life are also susceptible to having anxiety disorder. The good news is people with anxiety disorder can live a healthy, normal life with the right treatment, including natural remedies.

7 Natural Anxiety Treatments

St John’s wort – For those who suffer from depression, which is a symptom of anxiety disorder, St. John’s wort can help enhance mood and alleviate depression and anxiety. This herb is not recommended for people who are taking prescription antidepressants, MOA inhibitors or who drink alcohol on a regular basis. St. John’s wort comes in capsule form, extract, or can be made into a tea.

Passion Flower-This herb works like a sedative for calming sleeplessness and anxiety. One study of Passion Flower found it to be comparable to benzodiazepine drugs which are prescribed for insomnia, panic disorder and anxiety. This herb comes in capsules, tincture and liquid extract or as a dried herb that can be steeped and made into tea. If you are taking an antidepressant or MAO inhibitor you should not use this herb.

Valerian -This herb is beneficial for restlessness, sleeplessness, muscle spasms and tension, all symptoms of anxiety disorder. Europeans use this herb as a sedative. It is available in capsule form, tablets, tincture and as a tea. Recommended doses of this herb must be followed to prevent overdose or dangerous side-effects. People who drink alcohol or have liver disease should not take this herb.

Mugwort – Mugwort is a multi-use herb and is effective for anxiety, restlessness, depression, muscle spasms, insomnia, and headaches. This herb is safe with most prescriptions and has very few side-effects, although pregnant women or those who suffer from hay fever should not use this herb. Mugwort comes in capsules, extract and tincture form and the dried leaves can be made into a tea.

Vitamins and Minerals to Soothe Anxiety

B-Complex Vitamin-The body needs the recommended daily amount of B vitamins for a healthy nervous system. Eating foods rich in B vitamins or taking a B-Complex vitamin daily helps to soothe nerves and muscles and relieve stress.

Magnesium-This mineral is important for calming and relaxing muscles and nerves and can help you have a good night’s sleep. The proper amount of magnesium in your body can actually help to make you feel less stressed and anxious. The recommended allowance of magnesium per day for adults is between 300 and 400 milligrams. There are supplements available if you cannot get enough of this mineral through the foods you eat.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids-This essential fatty acid not only helps regulate the heart and circulatory system but also helps to alleviate depression caused by stress. Salmon, leafy green vegetables, nuts and seeds are foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and supplements are also available.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids are not only good for alleviating anxiety but are also excellent for other conditions as well. One food source that is often overlooked are hemp seeds which are abundant in essential fatty acids. If you want to try these healthy hemp seeds for FREE, please visit http://www.freehempseeds.info

Question by : What are the main symptoms of anxiety disorder and hypochondria?
It’s all in the question! I’m a 16 year old girl and i just wanna know what the symptoms are! X

Best answer:

Answer by Joy
I’d think they are both linked rather than being 2 separate disorders. If so the hypochondria is the main event and the anxiety is related to the worry over what illnesses and complaints you may have.

1. preoccupation with fears of having, or the idea that you do have, a serious disease based on the misinterpretation of body symptoms
2. This persist despite medical evaluation and reassurance
3. the belief at 1 isn’t a delusion, somatoform or body dysmorphic disorder
4. this idea causes significant distress and affects areas of life such as work, study, relationships
5. it has lasted at least 6 months
6. the preoccupation isn’t better accounted for as GAD, OCD, Panic Attacks, Depression, Separation anxiety, BPD or conversion disorder.

There are about 15 different sorts of anxiety disorders and a couple of them listed above.

In GAD the symptoms will be
1. excessive worry and anxiety on most days for at least 6 months
2. difficult to control the worry
3. relates to 3 or more of the 6 following symptoms -
a. restlessness
b. easily tired
c. difficultly concentrating
d. irritability
e. muscle tension
f. sleep disturbance

Hope this all helps sort out what you’re feeling

This is a high stress time. I’ve been diagnosed as depressed. Insomnia is really bad, to the point I dread going to bed. As soon as my head hits the pillow, my mind goes into high gear. Although I have a hard time losing weight normally, I’ve been dropping weight like you wouldn’t believe. Has anyone taken medications for problems like this, & was it effective? I finally got an appointment with the doctor this Friday. I’d appreciate recommendations from anyone. Thank you!

Anxiety attacks are horrifying! But you can stop them. And you can prevent them without medication. Here, you’ll discover what triggers anxiety attacks and how to stop them quite naturally.

Typically, doctors prescribe medication such as anti-depressants, tranquilizers and even beta-blockers for anxiety and anxiety attacks. The anti-depressants for managing your ‘mood’, tranquilizers for ‘calming’ you, and, beta-blockers to help manage some of the physical symptoms of anxiety.

And although drug-based medication can help some people, not all anxiety sufferers find them beneficial, not least because of their potentially serious side effects, which include dependency issues. Which is why people are increasingly — perhaps this is you — seeking out natural ways to treat anxiety, without recourse to drugs.

But, in order to best understand just how natural remedies for anxiety can work for you, and, the critical key needed to unlock your cure, you first need to understand how anxiety attacks can be triggered…

We need to go back hundreds of thousands of years, and picture our forefathers living and surviving in a very wild, hostile environment; where it definitely was the ‘survival of the fittest.’ And the human body, being something quite miraculous, was pre-equipped (and still is) to give the individual the greatest possible chance to survive and prosper.

For example, at the very ‘whiff’ of danger to the body, chemical reactions were triggered in the brain that produced split-second physical and emotional responses in the body. These gave the person under threat the greatly enhanced capacity to fight an enemy or wild animal, or, to run away to safety. This is why we call this the body’s ‘fight or flight’ response.

But how does all that relate to today, I hear you ask? Well, although the chances are that you aren’t going to be confronted by a pack of wild animals or a neighbouring tribe, looking to tear you limb from limb (lol), all your body needs to be faced with is the ‘perception’ that you are in danger. You see, the human body really is marvelous; it doesn’t take any chances with your life. If there is even a sense of danger, it doesn’t wait around to check and confirm it, it takes no chances and just triggers its fight or flight response!

So, in today’s society, what can possibly ‘trick’ the mind into thinking that you are in danger when you definitely aren’t?…

If you suffer from anxiety attacks then you already have higher than (your) normal levels of stress and anxiety. There could be a number of reasons for this, but the result is that you constantly worry, stress and even obsess on a daily basis. And probably about things that you would have taken in your stride in the past.

Now, in your vulnerable state, all it takes is for your stress / anxiety to rise even more, due to a stressful event or situation, such as sitting (or studying for) an exam, being stuck in traffic, shopping in a very crowded supermarket, etc. The outcome is that your overall anxiety levels are increased dramatically enough to ‘fool’ your mind into believing that you’re under threat, and so the fight or flight response is triggered.

The changes that that causes all over your body (e.g. blood pressure, heart rate, muscle enhancement, vision enhancement, etc.) leads to you experiencing some or all of the following symptoms; racing heart, tightness across your chest, nausea, tingling feeling in your extremities, dizziness / wooziness, irregular breathing, a feeling of not being connected to reality / being detached, a feeling that you are about to die even, etc. You are having a horrifying anxiety attack!

Now, to stop anxiety attacks, most people try to eliminate their general anxiety first. And there are many natural remedies and therapies to help you do this, e.g. hypnosis, psychotherapy, counselling, meditation, yoga, acupuncture, deep breathing exercises, visualization techniques, music therapy, etc.

But the key to unlocking the real mystery of how to stop panic attacks is to recognise that you have a real fear of having more anxiety attacks. You see, once having suffered the horrifying symptoms, you clearly never want to repeat that experience. So you end up with a conscious or unconscious ‘fear’ of having one. And guess what? This very fear (being anxiety) builds up on your already high anxiety levels and triggers another anxiety attack!

So, rather than working on your general anxiety first (with your fear of anxiety attacks always in the background), you need to get rid of your fear and so break out of this vicious cycle of; anxiety >> anxiety attack >> fear >> more anxiety >> another anxiety attack >> more fear >> etc. Then, once having banished your fear of attacks, which will help prevent further attacks, you can then work on effectively eliminating your general anxiety.

And, the first stage in this process, is to realize that your anxiety attacks can’t harm you. As you now know, they are just the symptoms of a perceived threat that doesn’t even exist. The next step is to learn and utilize a technique to help you eliminate your fear of anxiety attacks.

So, to discover the simple ‘ ONE MOVE ‘ technique that will eliminate your fear factor and break your vicious cycle of anxiety, please go here now http://eliminatepanicattacks.blogspot.com and prepare to get your old self back again.

Question by hellofajita: treatment for panic attacks?
has anyone out there a) been a worry wart and developed constant anxiety that never left and b) had panic attacks in only certain places who has gone to a doctor, received treatment (medication, therapy, whatever) and were able to go on to live a normal life without your anxiety and panic attacks?
because right now, i’m always anxious. it never goes away. and i have panic attacks only in my history class because that’s where it first happened and i can’t stop thinking about it while i’m in there. and i feel like no amount of medicine or talking it out will help me, even though i haven’t even gone to the doctor yet. is this a normal emotion? has anyone else felt this way that ended up feeling better?

Best answer:

Answer by Barry
“i feel like no amount of medicine or talking it out will help me” – you may well be correct in this, but see page M, at Weebly, below, about cognitive distortions; “fortune telling” in particular.

At the first sign of one, employ an ANTI PANIC ATTACK breathing technique. Advice from a clinical psychologist is to breathe in to the count of 3: (one thousand one; one thousand two; one thousand three) each takes around a second to say to yourself, in your mind, and out to the count of 3.

View http://deeplyrelax.com & www.deepsloweasy.com/html/intro.htm Note: the controlled breathing only helps with the symptoms, as do medications/herbal remedies. Address the underlying cause, which requires some form of therapy; see http://your-mental-health.weebly.com/ re anxiety, & pages H, & I. Imagine that the cause of your panic; your anxieties, fears, your self doubts, self recriminations, all the agonizing “I’m-so-Stupids”; every painful “I-can’t-do-it” are huge raging, hurtful bulls snorting and charging at you. You see them coming at you and you hold out your red matador’s cape at arms length and simply let them charge right by. Every time they come at you, hold out your arm with the red cape and let them rage and snort and go right on past. Some people recommend nettle tea, with a little honey. Others use Lavender tea, Lemon Balm, Chamomile, but use no milk or cream with herbal teas, or Valerian (caution: use it for 3 weeks at most!). Know how these affect you before driving, or doing anything dangerous, and it is far better to use the treatments, rather than relying on herbal remedies. Free online PANIC COURSE – www.panic-attacks.co.uk also available by email. See the section on panic attacks at www.mind.org.uk also Ebooklet form. They recommend letting a panic attack run its course, without doing anything to treat it, so you KNOW you will survive it. The usual maximum is 30 minutes, until symptoms begin to subside.

i know theres all kinds of therapy and hypnosis but i need an instant relief. what are any kinds of home remedies & techniques to block out anxiety for a while to be in a relaxed mental state …i dont know how you technically say it but to have the low brainwaves?

only real answers please, your just wasting your own time but this is a serious request so i would appreciate it.

thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by couriousbird
I have anxiety so bad sometimes it feels like my head is going to explode. What I have started doing is taking deep breathes, and drinking a cold glass of water which helps to calm me down. Also getting away from the area you’re stressing will keep you from freezing up. Drinking green tea helps warm up your innards and relax. Then try to figure out what triggered it when you’re calmer. It won’t stop them but helps you control them better, and reduce the length. You’re not alone. Keep your medication on hand for the more severe attacks and monitor how it affects your daily actvities.

Recognizing anxiety disorder symptoms is just the first step towards overcoming the problem. The next step is to find a suitable anxiety treatment plan, and this may consist of medication, behavioral therapy, dietary changes, and nutritional supplementation. According to MedicineNet.com, “if no physical illness is found, [the sufferer] may be referred to a psychiatrist or psychologist who is specially trained to diagnose and treat mental illnesses. Treatments for generalized anxiety disorder most often include a combination of medication and cognitive-behavioral therapy.”

Here are some of the most common anxiety treatment options available for people suffering from generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and other anxiety problems:

1. Cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety disorders. Recognizing the triggers of a panic attack, or identifying the root cause of an anxiety attack can be part of cognitive behavioral therapy treatment programs.

This type of treatment allows the sufferer to work with a licensed professional to identify the troublesome thoughts, behaviors and patterns to see where they may be behaving in an irrational or inappropriate way.

2. Anxiety medication. Several types of prescription drugs have proven to be effective for treating anxiety disorders, and the type and dosage varies by person and condition. The most common types of medication prescribed to those with anxiety disorder are a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines. These drugs have a tranquilizing effect on the body, and include drugs such as Valium, Librium, Xanax and BuSpar.

3. Antidepressants. Many people suffering from anxiety disorders also experience symptoms of depression. In some cases, treating the depression can alleviate many of the effects of the anxiety disorder. Antidepressants such as Effexor and Paxil can help improve the mood, reduce tension and make the person feel more balanced.

4. Lifestyle changes. Reducing stress naturally through regular exercise, meditation or stretching can help to improve the effects of an anxiety disorder and reduce many symptoms. People who experience chronic stress and tension can limit these feelings naturally by undertaking a vigorous cardiovascular exercise regimen, doing yoga or pilates, or meditation regularly. Increasing oxygen and blood circulation can help the person feel more relaxed and centered.

5. Nutritional supplements. For people who have difficulty sleeping or calming down, nutritional supplements such as Valerian extract, chamomile and lavender can help to reduce tension and induce sleep naturally. These supplements may be most effective for people with mild symptoms and brief episodes of chronic anxiety.

6. Dietary changes. Eating certain types of food can increase or reduce the risk of anxiety attacks or tension. Eating too many sugary foods can increase the heart rate and make it difficult to concentrate, thereby aggravating some of the symptoms of anxiety. Calming foods such as milk, oats, lentils and yogurt can help keep energy levels stable and reduce the risk of an anxiety attack. Making minor dietary changes on a regular basis often accompanies anxiety treatment programs.

There may not be a cure for anxiety, but there are several anxiety treatments available to reduce the effects and eliminate symptoms. A mental health professional can help anxiety disorder sufferers create an effective anxiety treatment plan that works in the short and long-term, and help the person overcome their chronic condition.

If you’ve ever suffered from anxiety when socializing with people, or have fear of leaving your home, there is hope. A non-pharmaceutical anxiety treatment that can help you to free yourself from the unsettling thoughts that may lead to panic attacks.

They can seem impossible to deal with and make us feel that we’ll never be free… but it doesn’t have to be like this. With the right knowledge it is possible to cure all these problems completely.

There is one way to truly overcome anxiety and fear, here it is:-

1. Grade things that cause you anxiety on a scale from 1-10 (more if you need to).
10 = situations / circumstances / compulsions / thoughts / tasks etc. that cause only very mild anxiety.

1 = the most terrifying.

2. Start with number 10.
Feel the anxiety, let it happen and control it by accepting it and relaxing. Note that here it is very important that you actually have anxiety, feel it and feel yourself control it. The goal is not to be anxiety free, everyone has anxiety but for some of us we have become more sensitive to it. The aim is to experience a small amount of anxiety at the lowest level and learn that we can control it. To feel ourselves control it.

3. Move to level 9.
Do the same as before. Feel the anxiety and feel yourself controlling it.

4. Gradually move up through the levels.
Only move to the next level when you have mastered taking control at each level. Remember, nobody in this world has no anxiety – it is part of being human.

Taking control is feeling scared but remaining calm, not letting it progress to panic.

This is no magic method or trick. It is based on how we work as humans – how everybody develops confidence naturally. Picture a young child, full of apprehension, approaching the (big, scary) ocean for the first time. First they let the water cover their feet; then, when they feel more confident they move deeper, up to their knees. As confidence grows, they move up to their waist… and so on.

We are doing nothing more. In the above we are simply breaking huge fears into smaller manageable parts and growing confident step-by-step. In psychology, this is known as systematic desensitisation and using it, a good psychologist can often cure someone with a specific phobia in a matter of hours. It is possible to take a spider phobic from being petrified of looking at pictures of spiders to being able to allow big hairy (but harmless) spiders crawl over their hands.

Facing fearful situations may seem too difficult when we first consider this, but if we can break frightening situations into smaller steps and actually learn to be confident at each step it becomes possible to successfully face situations that once caused us anxiety and fear.
